Violence escalates at Lebanese-Israeli border

Violence escalates at Lebanese-Israeli border

Tel Aviv/Beirut, 17 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The Israeli army said an attack on Tuesday from Lebanon on the border town of Metulla in northern Israel wounded two soldiers and one civilian.

The pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement, for their part, said five of their fighters died on Tuesday. The Shiite organization carried out a total of 10 attacks on Israeli positions during the day.

The movement said its fighters in one of their attacks struck surveillance equipment on the Israeli side of the border.

Lebanese security sources said around 30 artillery shells were fired in retaliation from Israel into Lebanese territory. They caused only material damage.

Some Israeli shells also fell near the town of Maroun al-Ras, where there is also a post of the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Since the attacks on Israel by the militant Palestinian organization Hamas on October 7 and the Israeli army's counter-attacks on the Gaza Strip, there have been regular incidents on the border between Israel and Lebanon in recent days. These are fuelling concerns about further escalation of the conflict in the region.
