Venezuela accuses US of attacks on civilian, military facilities

Washington, 3 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The Venezuelan government on Saturday accused the United States of striking civilian and military targets in the country, after reported explosions in the capital Caracas.

The "extremely serious military agression" was in contravention of the UN charter, the government statement said.

US media reported that the US had carried out multiple attacks on sites in Venezuela. Broadcaster CBS news cited US officials as saying that President Donald Trump had authorized the military action.

A series of explosions hit the Venezuelan capital Caracas, according to local media reports earlier.

Images published by the television station NTN24 showed explosions and clouds of smoke.

The US has ramped up its military campaign in recent months against alleged drug smuggling linked to Venezuela, which is governed by authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro.

Dozens of people have been killed so far in boat attacks by the US military.

On Monday, President Donald Trump confirmed a military attack on a Venezuelan port facility allegedly used for drug-smuggling operations.

Maduro has accused the Trump administration of trying to force regime change in Caracas.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said Caracas was under attack, and called for an urgent meeting of the Organization of American States and the United Nations.
