Varvitsiotis: EU integration of Western Balkans not a matter of debate but of time
Athens, 15 September 2021 (MIA) – For us, the accession of the Western Balkans in the EU is not a matter of debate but one of time. We have to do this as quickly as possible and include the voices of the people from the Western Balkans in the dialogue on our common future, said Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis after the Thessaloniki event “The Western Balkans joins the dialogue on the future of Europe” on Wednesday, MIA reports from Athens.
Ahead of the remarks by his colleagues from the six countries of the Western Balkans, Varvitsiotis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to the EU perspective of the region, recalling the 2003 Thessaloniki process in order to finalize “the geographic unity of the European Union.”
He added that COVID-19 has been challenge for the prosperity of EU's common future, referring to the Recovery Fund that also includes the region.
“EU is a never-ending process for more Europe, more unity, more common actions, more challenges,” noted Vavritsiotis.
