Washington, 8 May 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The US government criticized Syria's recent return to the Arab League after a more than decade-long suspension.
A US State Department spokesman said the United States "do not believe that Syria merits readmission to the Arab League at this time."
"I will note that we share a number of the same goals with our Arab partners with respect to Syria, including reaching a solution to the Syrian crisis that is consistent with UN Security Council resolution 2254," he added.
The US assumes that the partners could use the direct contact with Syria to make demands in these areas, the spokesman said. He stressed that normalizing relations with Syria was not currently a topic of discussion for the US.
At the weekend, the foreign ministers of the Arab countries ended the exclusion of the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, which had been expelled from the organization in 2011 after the government's brutal crackdown of protestors that led to a civil war.
