US: Russian aggression in Ukraine underscores urgency to aid Western Balkans

Washington, 21 November 2023 (MIA) - The aggression of Russia in Ukraine underscores the urgency and importance of Washington’s efforts to assist the Western Balkan states in achieving their aspirations for European integration and membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions, reads the statement from the press office of the US Department of State to Voice of America’s Macedonian service, in response to the request to comment on the statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia could potentially provoke new crises in the Balkans.

Zelensky stated last week that he has evidence of Moscow’s intentions to start a war between Western Balkan states.

“Washington is working with Western Balkan states and European partners to advance governance, rule of law and anti-corruption reforms that will reduce the possibility of malign Russian influence and bring long-term peace, stability and prosperity for the region,” the statement of the US Department of State read.

The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, in coordination with the US Department of State, last week added individuals and twelve entities to the sanctions list due to ties to Russia and corrupt and criminal activities in the Western Balkans.

The United States Government has sanctioned Sergey Samsonenko, his wife Irina and Ratka Kunoska Kamcheva, and companies "Sistina Lajf Kear Sentar", "Orka Holding", "Bet Siti", "Orka Fajnans" and "Kamcev Konsalting" from North Macedonia.

“The sanctions announced by the State and Treasury Departments on Thursday target precisely this issue, the interconnection of Russian malign influence and corruption. Both of these hinder the region’s efforts to move towards EU membership and a more prosperous future,” the statement read.

“The Western Balkan states and all states in Europe have a significant interest in the outcome of Russia’s war against Ukraine, a war that threatens the foundations of international order and security. Therefore, it is crucial that we continue to stand together against Russian aggression,” it said.

“Russia has continued to use its influence in the Western Balkans to stymie the region’s integration into international institutions and organizations, as well as leverage key jurisdictions to facilitate its aggressive destabilizing activities,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson. “Today’s action reaffirms the U.S. Government’s wider efforts to promote peace, stability, and functional democratic governance in the Western Balkans region.”
