US President Joe Biden's son Hunter pleads guilty in tax case

Washington, 6 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - US President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to federal tax charges on Thursday, several media outlets reported, citing journalists in the courtroom.

The guilty plea came on the same day that his trial was supposed to begin with jury selection in Los Angeles.

Sentencing is now scheduled to take place in December, broadcasters CNN and NBC reported.

Prosecutors alleged that Biden failed to pay federal taxes properly for several years. They alleged Biden spent his money on luxury cars, extravagant hotels and sex workers, instead of paying taxes when they were due.

Biden, 54, initially said he wanted to enter an Alford plea, where he would accept the charges while maintaining his innocence, but then said he would plead guilty when prosecutors objected.

Biden has been making headlines for years. In addition to alcoholism and drug addiction, he has also been involved in dubious business deals and legal disputes with a former stripper over child support for an illegitimate child.

In June, a jury found Biden guilty on charges related to gun possession and drug use.

President Biden has repeatedly said that he would not pardon his son in the event of a conviction.
