US issues new waiver allowing Russian oil sales

Washington, 18 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The United States issued another temporary sanctions waiver for Russian oil amid higher energy prices linked to the Iran war, the US Treasury Department said on Friday.
The waiver authorizes the delivery and sale of Russian-origin crude oil and petroleum products loaded onto vessels as of Friday. It runs until May 16.
Washington is again trying to calm global energy markets with the move.
The US had already granted such a waiver in mid-March, which expired on April 11.
Critics said the measure strengthened Russia financially. The Kremlin uses revenue from the oil industry to finance its war against Ukraine.
US sanctions have targeted Russia's oil sector for years. Countries and companies doing business with Moscow can normally risk becoming sanctions targets themselves.
