Urawa Red Diamonds and Al Ahly reach Club World Cup semis

Berlin, 16 December 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Asian champions Urawa Red Diamonds beat Club Leon of Mexico 1-0 on Friday in Jeddah to advance into a Club World Cup semi-final against European Champions League winners Manchester City.

 

Dutchman Alex Schalk came off the bench to score the 78th minute winner for Japan's Urawa who will face Pep Guardiola's City on Tuesday.

 

In the later quarter-final, former Real Madrid and France forward Karim Benzema missed a penalty as Saudi champions Al Ittihad lost 3-1 against African champions Al Ahly of Egypt, who will meet Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense in the other semi-final.

 

Al Ahli led from Ali Maaloul's penalty in the 21st minute before Benzema failed to level at 1-1 when his spot kick, also awarded for handball, was saved by goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy.

 

Al Ahli ran away with the game after the break, with Hussein Elshahat making it 2-0 with a curling shot in the 59th and Emam Ashour wrapped up matters three minutes later.

 

Benzema got a consolation goal in stoppage time, after Al Ahly's Anthony Modeste was sent off, meaning he will miss the Fluminense date.
