New York, 15 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) - UNICEF director Catherine Russell has been injured in a car accident while on her way to visit the Gaza Strip.

Russell was involved in an accident in Egypt as she travelled to the Rafah border crossing on Tuesday, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

"The vehicle she was in flipped on its side," said spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

The head of the UN's children's aid agency nevertheless continued on with the visit to Gaza.

Afterwards, however, doctors advised her to get treatment for her injuries. As a result, Russell cut short her trip to the region.

Her trip to the Gaza Strip included a visit to a hospital. The UNICEF director called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
