Turkey, Greece urge help for Afghan refugees in neighbouring states
Istanbul/Athens, 21 August 2021 (dpa/MIA) - Afghanistan's neighbours need help to shoulder the burden of new refugees from that country and to avoid a potential influx beyond their borders, agreed the leaders of Turkey and Greece in a phone call.
The European Union should support Afghan people fleeing to surrounding countries, Iran in particular, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to Erdogan's office.
The pressing issue of migration will become even more "challenging for everyone" unless a peaceful transition is maintained in Afghanistan, Erdogan added.
Afghanistan’s neighbours should be supported so that Afghans “stay as close to their homes as possible,” Mitsotakis said according to his office. Turkey and Greece have recently stepped up measures at their borders, including building walls and fences in fear of a mass Afghan exodus.
