Trump: Strait of Hormuz open, but blockade of Iranian ports remains

Washington, 17 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have said the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened, though Trump said the US blockade of Iranian ports remains in place.
"In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire," Araghchi posted on X.
Shortly afterwards, Trump confirmed that Iran had declared that the strait is "fully open and ready for full passage," in a post on Truth Social.
In a follow-up post, Trump said the US naval blockade of Iranian ports implemented in response to Iran blocking the Strait of Hormuz would "remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete."
He added that he expected a resolution to come "very quickly in that most of the points are already negotiated."
Commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that is vital for global oil trade, has virtually come to a halt after Iran threatened to attack ships in response to the US-Israeli war launched on February 28.
