Trump rules out second US presidential debate against Harris

Washington, 13 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump on Thursday ruled out a second debate against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris ahead of the November 5 election.

The pair faced off in a lively televised debate, the only scheduled head-to-head between the two, on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform he had taken part in a debate against Joe Biden earlier in the year.

"There will be no third debate," he wrote.

Trump wrote that he had won the debate and that Harris had only called for another due to her loss.

"When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are, 'I want a rematch,'" Trump wrote.

Immediately after Tuesday's debate, Harris' team said there should be a second debate between the two in October.

"Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?"

In a viewer survey following Tuesday's debate in Philadelphia 45% expressed a favourable opinion of Harris, compared to 39% for Trump.

The survey, of registered voters who watched the debate, was conducted by a polling organization for several US media outlets including CNN.
