Trenchevska: Workers and their rights come first, cooperation with ILO continues

Skopje, 11 December 2023 (MIA) - Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Jovanka Trenchevska, met with International Labor Organization (ILO) Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe, Claire Harasty, for talks on the cooperation with ILO and the Organization's contribution to the Ministry's work in terms of greater labor rights, better jobs and the fluidity of workers on the labor market in the country, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy said in a press release.

Trenchevska briefed Harasty on the new draft law on labor relations, pointing out that all technical comments of the International Labor Organization have been taken into account. She noted that ILO representatives in the country have actively participated in each of the public debates on the law, where constructive comments have been given by all relevant stakeholders, reads the press release.

The Minister also mentioned ILO's new diagnostic tool for self-assessment of the labor dispute resolution mechanism.

"The country applied ILO's new tool for self-assessment of the labor dispute resolution mechanism, and it proved to be an effective tool that helped us detect the shortcomings of our mechanism," said Trenchevska.

She also highlighted the fruitful cooperation between the Labor Ministry and ILO in terms of safety and health at work.

According to the Ministry, participants in the meeting also discussed the drafting of a new law on protection against harassment in the workplace, pointing out that it should be aligned with the Violence and Harrassment Convention No. 190 which was ratified in the Republic of North Macedonia this year.

Regional Director Harasty expressed ILO's readiness to join in the process of aligning the law on protection against harassment in the workplace with the Convention No. 190, noting it is a real pleasure to see that the Government has continuous cooperation with the ILO Office in the country. She pointed out that any help that is needed for the promotion of the issues that the ILO stands for will be provided selflessly, the Labor Ministry said.
