Trenchevska: Swedish experiences a positive example for improved approach to protecting women from violence

Skopje, 5 May 2023 (MIA) – A delegation from North Macedonia led by Minister of Labor and Social Policy Jovanka Trenchevska visited the National Centre for Knowledge on Men's Violence Against Women at the Uppsala University in Sweden on Friday, where they were introduced to methods of research and training aimed at an improved approach to protecting women from violence.

In a press release, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy said that the Centre consists of research, training, education and communication units. Through their operations, they support the agencies and Government in their work and carry out training for students. Their approach is interdisciplinary and formed through the prism of medicine, law, sociology, criminology, psychology, gender studies, public health and political science.

The visit, according to the Ministry, was aimed at deepening knowledge about methods of research and training with the goal of an improved approach to protecting women from violence.

Representatives from the Centre introduced the Macedonian delegation to the operations of the national helpline for reporting violence, and informing victims about types of violence.

“The representatives noted that the helplines are available for both women and men. Additionally, the mental health of women who have been victims of violence, and the increased incidence of anxiety and depression were discussed at the meeting,” said the Ministry in the press release.

The Ministry said that a special accent was placed on the consequences emerging after the acts of violence suffered by women. Additionally, it said, the discussion focused on technological improvements and types of violence more common in the modern era.

The visit supported by UN Women through the “Gender Mainstreaming Advisory Services to North Macedonia’s Administration at Central Level” project is aimed at boosting the capacities of institutions over the issue of gender equality.
