Trenchevska: 1,166 domestic violence cases reported Jan. through Sept. 2023, most involve psychological abuse

Skopje, 15 January 2024 (MIA) - Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Jovanka Trenchevska, said that in terms of domestic violence, most cases reported last year involved psychological abuse.

She noted that 1,166 cases of domestic violence were reported January through September 2023, of which 708 were related to psychological abuse.

"A total of 1,166 cases of domestic violence were reported January through September 2023. We are currently looking into the period September through December, and will soon publish data for the entire 2023. The majority of the cases reported, i.e. 708 cases, involve psychological abuse, unlike before when the most common type of violence was physical violence," Trenchevska told a press briefing on Monday.

She pointed out that emotional abuse is very hard to prove because there are no visible traces, apart from a decline in the mental and psychological health of citizens. Trenchevska noted that the majority of victims of psychological abuse are women.

"In the area of psychological abuse, we have constant demeaning or dismissing of a partner, of children or parents, and all this leaves a deep mark on a person's psyche and is very difficult to recognize. Victims of violence are children and older citizens, but the largest percentage are still women," said Trenchevska.
