Skopje, 6 December 2024 (MIA) - Minister of Interior, Panche Toshkovski, believes that the security situation is not compromised, after the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) said that a repeal of any provision of the Law on the Use of Languages, which is on the agenda of a Constitutional Court session scheduled for Wednesday, will be a direct blow to the stability and peace of North Macedonia.

In an interview with Sitel TV on Friday, Toshkovski pointed out that the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has the necessary capacities and will respond to all challenges as before.

"We believe that the security situation is not compromised. We have also said in the past that there are attempts at destabilization. Yes, it is a fact that certain malefactors do not like the fact that we have a democratic country in which the law and justice will rule, and this can be seen through their actions," said Toshkovski. 

He added that DUI's appeal directly interferes with the work and competence of the Constitutional Court.

"I believe that the Constitutional Court should make a decision in accordance with the Constitution and the law. It is the court's job to decide whether a particular law or a particular provision is in accordance with the constitutional provisions. All political entities and other factors in society will have to respect the decision that will be made by the Constitutional Court, regardless of which direction it will have," Toshkovski added.

Previously, DUI said that any attempt to repeal any provision of the Law on the Use of Languages is not just a legal act, but a direct blow to the stability and peace of the country. 

"The Constitutional Court of North Macedonia decided to review on December 11 the constitutionality of the Law on the Use of Languages ​​– one of the key pillars of the Ohrid Framework Agreement and interethnic harmony. This law is the product of a complex compromise, achieved after years of painstaking negotiations, and represents the foundation of interethnic equality and mutual respect. A decision that would jeopardize this law would represent a serious violation of the Ohrid Agreement and a return to an uncertain and unstable future," DUI said in a press release, adding that if the Constitutional Court decides to destroy the achievements of the Ohrid Agreement, the consequences will be irreparable.

"We appeal to citizens, political leaders and the international community to immediately take action to prevent this act that threatens the stability of the country and the region," adds DUI's press release.
