Zagreb, 17 August 2021 (Hina/MIA) — Bosnia and Herzegovina logged 276 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, after registering on Aug. 8 a three-digit number of new daily cases for the first time in a month and a half. At the same time, Montenegrin epidemiologists said the delta coronavirus variant had been determined in Montenegro, after it was confirmed in Croatia on June 28, a day later in North Macedonia, and on July 1 in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Health experts in the country warned that it was clear Bosnia and Herzegovina was entering the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic and that the number of new infections was likely to increase daily. The main hotspot is Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, especially the town of Neum, which has a very high incidence of nearly 298 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, there are currently slightly over 5,700 active cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent months, Bosnia and Herzegovina has been significantly behind in terms of immunizing its population, and so far slightly over 2.7 million doses of vaccines, predominantly AstraZeneca and the Chinese Sinopharm with 1.1 million doses of each, have been delivered to the country. The first dose has been administered to 536,000 persons, or 15.7% of the total population, while 327,000 persons, or less than 10%, have received both doses. In Montenegro, epidemiologists confirmed the suspicion of the health authorities that the new variant of the virus was present in the country after the number of infections surged in early August. The presence of the delta variant was confirmed by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, to which samples from Montenegro had been sent, Montenegrin health authorities said. They said they had been expecting the detection and presence of the delta variant in Montenegro for a while and they had been warning the public of the possibility. The delta variant is much more contagious, Montenegrin epidemiologists said, recalling that the variant had first appeared in India in October 2020, and in June 2021, 90% of the infected people in Great Britain were infected with this variant. In recent days, Montenegro has been logging about 350 cases a day, and most of them are from cities on the Montenegrin coast, where there are currently nearly 150,000 tourists. There are currently about 4,500 active coronavirus cases in the country.
