New Delhi, 19 January 2022 (dpa/MIA) — At least three personnel were killed in an explosion on an Indian Navy ship, defense officials said Wednesday. The blast took place on the INS Ranvir at the naval dockyard in Mumbai on Tuesday evening and the cause of the incident is being investigated, a navy spokesman said. The ship’s crew responded immediately to bring the situation under control and no major material damage was reported, he added. Government sources told domestic media that the explosion - which occurred in an internal compartment of the ship - had nothing to do with weapons or ammunition. INS Ranvir is among the oldest warships of the Indian Navy, domestic media reported. The ship was built in the former Soviet Union and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in April 1986. Indian Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar offered his condolences to the families of the sailors killed in the incident. Several politicians also expressed grief over the deaths.
