Thousands of houses flooded in eastern Russia following typhoon

Moscow, 13 August 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Thousands of houses have been affected by flooding after a typhoon hit eastern Russia.

More than 4,300 houses in 16 villages, 5,600 properties and 43 road sections were still underwater in the Primorsky Krai region on Sunday, according to the civil protection agency.

Twenty-eight villages were cut off due to the flooding, it said. No casualties have been reported so far. More than 2,000 residents have been evacuated.

In the past few days, the region in Russia's far east, which borders China, has been affected by typhoon Khanun, which also raged in Japan. The coastal areas of Primorsky Krai border the Sea of Japan, or East Sea.

A state of emergeny was declared after severe flooding triggered by a dam burst near the town of Spassk-Dalny and heavy rains following the typhoon.

Around Spassk-Dalny, the water was slowly receding on Sunday, according to the regional administration.

Because some transformer stations stopped operating due to the floods, many households were still without electricity. Near the town of Ussuriysk, a border crossing to China was severely damaged, according to the local newspaper.
