Tehran/Tel Aviv, 25 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) - In view of an expected Israeli retaliatory strike on Iran, the military in Tehran is devising a number of military plans, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

But the severity of its response depends on what Israel will do, the the newspaper reported, citing four unnamed Iranian officials, including two members of the the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

If the Israeli armed forces were to launch a major attack on Iran, such as targeting the country's oil and nuclear facilities, the reaction would be fierce,

If such a scenario were to materialize, Iran would consider firing up to 1,000 ballistic missiles at Israel, escalating attacks by proxy militant groups in the region and disrupting shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

But if Israel's attacks were limited to some warehouses and a few military bases, Iran might not even respond, the story said. Iran has publicly stated that it does not want war.

Iran backs a network of militias and political groups that includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza and the Houthis in Yemen, all of which have launched attacks against Israel.

At the beginning of October, Iran fired around 200 ballistic missiles at Israel. The government in Tel Aviv responded by announcing its intent to retaliate. It is unclear when and how this will happen.
