Taravari: This is AA’s legitimate congress

Skopje, 16 February 2024 (MIA) - The leader of the Alliance for Albanians (AA), Arben Taravari, stated late Friday before the start of the party’s extraordinary congress that he expects the decisions regarding coalition with opposition bloc of ethnic Albanians to be confirmed, as well as his candidacy for president in the upcoming elections.

"The congress has been convened for two main purposes. The first is to secure support from the congress to run for president of the country and to begin collecting signatures. The second is to confirm the coalition, which is scheduled for tomorrow, and then we will have another point regarding statutory amendments to provisions that were evidently misused in the past period," Taravari said.

Asked about the congress called by the former party president Sela and the party's assembly president, scheduled for Sunday, Taravari said, "This is the legitimate congress." According to him, to convene a meeting, two-thirds of the delegates are required, and Sela did not have even half of them. Regarding whom he prefers as an opposing candidate from the ranks of DUI, Taravari says he would like it to be the president of DUI, Ali Ahmeti.

The congress is convened two days before Sela's scheduled gathering, where Taravari will be held accountable and potentially ousted due to his coalition decision with the support of the opposition parties of ethnic Albanians.

Alliance for Albanians (AA) leader and Gostivar Mayor, Arben Taravari, said Thursday he will run for President in the upcoming election. His bid comes at the proposal of the AA leadership and is backed by the opposition bloc of ethnic Albanians, united in the coalition European Alliance for Change.
