Taravari optimist on start of negotiations 'very soon', country needs guarantees

Skopje, 21 October 2024 (MIA) - I am one of the few optimists in the country and continue to think that we will start the EU accession negotiation very soon, says Health Minister Arben Taravari.

Minister Taravari told 360 Degrees that an acceptable solution is required, whereas the country needs guarantees that fresh demands would not come. According to him, PM Mickoski's idea of endorsing the constitutional amendments and their enforcement once the Bulgarian parliament ratifies Macedonia's EU accession treaty is not bad.

"It is not good that we have been decoupled from Albania but it is good they started the process. (Albanian) PM Rama was right when saying that Macedonia deserves to start the negotiations. I don't believe this is buying time, we are looking for the right momentum, some kind of guarantees for the country so that we start the negotiations. I hope that negotiations will take place in parallel with Albania, I am quite optimistic about this and I still think that all countries of the Western Balkans will join the EU at the same time," says Taravari.

He believes that an acceptable solution will be found, while adding that the constitutional changes must be made in order to start the negotiations.

"Nevertheless, we will need guarantees that fresh demands will not come again. We are aware that the negotiating framework will not change and that Macedonia will have to adopt the constitutional amendments. However, we also need guarantees, because if we continue like this, various countries can set various conditions," notes Taravari.
