Syria says Israeli strike hits Aleppo airport, puts it out of service

Israel attacked Syria's Aleppo airport on Tuesday morning, putting it out of service, state-run media reported.

Citing a military source, the official Syrian news agency SANA reported that the Israeli army launched the air attack from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the report, the attack damaged Aleppo International Airport and put it out of service.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has been documenting violence in Syria since the civil war began in 2011, also reported that the attack took place, saying that the facility sustained heavy material damage.

This was the second attack on the airport in six months, the observatory said.

There were initially no reports of casualties.

The information could not initially be independently verified. The Israeli military did not initially comment.

Israel regularly bombs targets in neighbouring Syria in an effort to prevent arch-rival Iran from expanding its influence there.

Aleppo has been badly damaged in the Syrian civil war. The devastating earthquakes in the Syrian-Turkish border region last month also caused severe damage and claimed lives in the area.
