Switzerland and North Macedonia mark 30 years of diplomatic ties

Skopje, 31 January 2024 (MIA) - Switzerland and North Macedonia are observing Wednesday 30 years of diplomatic relations highlighted by strong partnership, significant international cooperation and diaspora ties.

Relations have enhanced over the past three decades, setting up a framework for cooperation at a local, regional and national level, as well as joint commitment to mutual values. In formal terms, cooperation between the two countries is based on more than 80 bilateral and multilateral agreements in various fields, the Embassy of Switzerland said in a press release.

Switzerland recognized the independence of then-Republic of Macedonia in May 1993. On 31 January 1994, a delegation led by Swiss Ambassador Arnold Hugentobler arrived in Skopje to meet with Foreign Minister Stevo Crvenkovski, thus officially establishing bilateral diplomatic ties.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Skopje opened in 2000, reaffirming the close ties between the two countries.

Over the course of three decades, Switzerland has become North Macedonia's close partner and largest bilateral donor, providing close to CHF 350 million (EUR 375 million) in priority areas that contribute to improving the quality of life, through reforms in democratic governance, sustainable economic development, environment protection and delivery of sustainable public services.

Swiss cooperation programmes feature a long-term perspective, intersectional approach and focus on building strong partnerships. Every intervention is focused on the common goal of continually improving the quality of life and perspectives of all people and communities in North Macedonia. Close cooperation will continue through the commitment for joint prosperity, growth and development, reads the press release.
