Spring break cancelled after being considered not needed

Skopje, 1 September 2024 (MIA) – Spring break for elementary and high school students will be cancelled this year, the Ministry of Education and Science has decided after conducting a survey that involved teachers, parents and students. A majority of them said a spring break is not needed.

The 2024/2025 school year begins on September 2 and ends on June 10. High school graduates will end their school year on May 16.

“Winter break starts on December 31 and ends on January 19. Summer break starts on June 11 and ends on August 31. There will be no spring break. The decision comes as a result of a survey of teachers, parents and students after a majority of them said a spring break is not needed,” Education Minister Vesna Janevska said Sunday speaking at a news conference.

Only several schools will start the new school year online after their principals failed to complete reconstruction works or procurement of new equipment on time, she added.

The Minister said that 140 schools will have single-shift classes, adding the government is making efforts to introduce single-shift classes next year in all schools nationwide.

Janevska also told the news conference that over, 1,000 learning assistants will be hired to accompany students with disabilities.
