Speaker Xhaferi to present details over sessions on resignations, election of caretaker gov't

Skopje, 24 January 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi is set to hold a coordination meeting on Wednesday focused on the details for the sessions on the resignations and election of the caretaker government. Afterwards, the Speaker will hold an informal press briefing on current and coming activities of the Parliament.

As previously announced, lawmakers will first verify the resignations of the Prime Minister (Dimitar Kovachevski) and the Parliament Speaker (Talat Xhaferi), followed by the election of a new Speaker (Jovan Mitreski). The President will then be informed on the new mandate for the PM (Talat Xhaferi), followed by the election of a government, ministers, deputy ministers and additional deputy ministers, as well as verification of the mandate of a new MP.

A caretaker government is set to be elected by Sunday midnight, headed by Talat Xhaferi. This 100-day government will implement the first round of the presidential elections on April 24 and the May 8 parliamentary elections and presidential runoff.

PM Kovachevski has said he would resign on Thursday, meaning that the entire Government has resigned. VMRO-DPMNE has confirmed it will announce the names of the nominees for caretaker ministers of interior and labor and social policy, and additional deputy ministers for finance, information society and administration, and agriculture after a session of the party's executive committee late on Wednesday.

Representatives of VMRO-DPMNE and opposition parties of ethnic Albanians have not attended coordination meetings, with the latter saying it will boycott the Parliament due to the failure to elect their candidate as member of the State Election Commission.
