Speaker Gashi condemns threats addressed at DUI lawmakers, urges investigation

Skopje, 27 July 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said Saturday that DUI lawmakers have received e-mails with threats from an unknown sender, urging institutions to investigate the case.

Speaker Gashi condemns any form of threat, attempt of violence or inciting violence. MPs are elected by citizens and while freedom of speech is absolute, the freedom of others cannot be endangered. The anonymity of messages gives the sender a feeling of impunity but the Speaker is convinced that the sender will be identified and properly sanctioned, the Parliament said in a press release.

He adds there is no place for threats or any form of harassment in a democratic society.

Gashi urges all competent institutions to proceed and shares the discomfort of MPs and their families.

The Ministry of Interior said yesterday a representative of a political party reported that a threatening e-mail had been sent at the official addresses of several MPs on July 23. The MoI's economic and cybercrime unit has been informed and investigation is underway.
