Skopje Zoo reopens for visitors after bird flu outbreak

Skopje, 9 November 2024 (MIA) - The Skopje Zoo reopened for visitors on Saturday after it was closed in October due to an outbreak of avian influenza.

“We would like to notify you that as of this Saturday (09.11.2024) the Skopje Zoo will reopen for visitors with a regular working time from 9 am to 4 pm every day. Let’s enjoy the beautiful autumn sunny days together,” the Zoo wrote in a post on Facebook.

The Skopje Zoo was closed to visitors in October after an outbreak of bird flu.

On Oct. 19, Food and Veterinary Agency inspectors carried out an inspection at the zoo, assisted by police, and ordered measures under the Law on Veterinary Health and official guidelines for avian influenza control. The measures included imposing a visitor ban; killing and safely disposing of birds; collecting samples for laboratory testing; disinfecting the area; and increasing biosecurity protocols, the FVA said.

As part of the measures, the FVA said it had culled 24 ducks, 6 geese, 5 chickens, and one jackdaw.
