Skopje, 12 May 2024 (MIA) - Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova officially took over the office of President on Sunday from outgoing President Stevo Pendarovski in a ceremony with the highest state and military honors.
Siljanovska-Davkova headed to the presidential residence after being sworn in in Parliament earlier on Sunday, where she pledged to carry out her duties responsibly and addressed the MPs, diplomatic corps, and representatives of political and social life.
Sunday marks the official beginning of Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova's six-year term as North Macedonia’s sixth president and first woman to hold the post.
Siljanovska-Davkova won 561.000 votes in the presidential run-off on May 8.
In her speech in Parliament, which she dedicated to women in order “to inspire them that it is possible for a woman, too, to become a president of the country”, the 71-year-old university professor vowed to try to justify the trust she had been given.
