Skopje, 22 November 2024 (MIA) - The standardization of the Albanian alphabet was not only an act of linguistic reform, but also a symbol of the endeavor for emancipation and enlightenment, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova said in a message congratulating Albanian Alphabet Day.

“November 22 is a historic day for the Albanians, but also for the Macedonian state. 116 years ago in Bitola, the Albanian alphabet was standardized in an act that reinforced the linguistic self-awareness of the Albanian people and laid the foundation for further cultural and civilizational progress,” the President said.

Language, according to the President, creates space for understanding, for cooperation and coming together around the values of identity.  

“The Albanian language and culture are embedded in our social fabric and create room for mutual understanding and coexistence. Our respect for linguistic differences makes us a democratic, multicultural society. We have been and remain to be an example of commitment to the preservation and promotion of ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious diversity, enabling education in one’s mother tongue at all levels, as well as free and dignified expression of collective memory and spirituality,” Siljanovska-Davkova said in her message.
