Shukova: Green transformation is a major economic task

Skopje, 9 January 2024 (MIA) - "Green Energy Transition and Healthier Environment for a European Future" was the title of a Tuesday panel discussion that was held in Skopje. In her opening address, Environment Minister Kaja Shukova said that the government is following recommendations made by the European Green Deal, which offers efficient use of resources with the aim of transitioning to a clean circular economy, and reducing pollution.

"Green transformation is a major economic task, so one of the main goals of this agreement is to ensure the safe transformation of poorer countries from highly polluting to environmentally sustainable. In order to reduce emissions quickly and efficiently, governments not only need to increase funding for green innovations, but also adopt policies that will address market failure," Shukova said.

The event was attended by the State Advisor for Energy at the Economy Ministry, Ismail Luma, energy and environment expert at MANU, Aleksandar Dedinec, and Head of the climate program at Eco-Awareness and Eco-activist, Elena Nikolovska.

The panel discussion aims to inform about the need for an enhanced energy transition, and building a solid and sustainable energy system from renewable sources-sun, water, wind, and also analyze and debate the benefits of the country's integration in relation to the environment for EU citizens, and effects on the energy transition within the country. The event was held within the framework of the Government's campaign "European Future, Closer than Ever," aimed to illustrate the benefits of European integration and EU membership for citizens of North Macedonia. ssh/sk/
