Shortage of workers in construction, hospitality and manufacturing: employment agency

Shtip, 5 October 2024 (MIA) - The shortage of staff is evident in construction, hospitality and manufacturing, said Employment Service Agency director Vesna Peshova in Shtip on Saturday.

Peshova said that instead of hiring Macedonian nationals, employers hire foreign workers who meet the specific requirements, while adding they are trying to keep young people home but also those who studied abroad to come back through various measures.

She said that the employers are the ones who select the staff but the Agency's role is to analyse the labor market and consider the quotas for foreign nationals.

"Oftentimes, employers have specific requirements that the people registered in the employment agency do not meet, such as certificates. This is the main reason why they decide to fill the job position with a foreign national," said Peshova.

The Employment Service Agency has thus far issued 5,000 positive opinions for employment of foreign nationals, whereas the annual quota stands at 20,000.
