Shaqiri: We expect DUI to support Afrim Gashi's nomination for speaker

Skopje, 28 May 2024 (MIA) – Riad Shaqiri of the Worth It coalition said Tuesday it is expected DUI to vote for Afrim Gashi to be elected parliament speaker at today’s constitutive session.

“The opposition has almost always voted against the nominations of the majority. But, in this case, the Alliance [for Albanians] had been part of the parliament when Talat Xhaferi was elected as president of the assembly and we had supported his nomination because he was the first Albanian parliament speaker. So, we expect them now to show support,” he told reporters before Tuesday’s Parliament session.

Earlier, Elmi Aziri of the European Front refrained from answering while arriving in Parliament whether the DUI-led coalition will vote for Gashi.

“We’re about to meet with the parliamentary group and to decide on it,” he said.

A constitutive session for the election of the new parliament is taking place Tuesday, which is expected to last at least three days. Parliament will be constituted once a speaker is elected, for which Afrim Gashi of Alternativa, part of the Worth It coalition, is expected to be nominated.
