Serbia Cargo leases four electric locomotives to Railways of North Macedonia

Belgrade, 24 September 2024 (MIA) - Serbia Cargo, the state-owned freight railway company, announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with Railways of North Macedonia – Transport Skopje, to lease four electric locomotives from the 461 series, thereby establishing strategic cooperation between the two state railway companies in the field of freight transport, MIA’s Belgrade correspondent reported.

Serbia Cargo stated that this agreement brings numerous benefits, as it will significantly speed up the flow of goods from Greek ports, such as Thessaloniki and Piraeus, through North Macedonia and Serbia, enabling faster transit to the European Union.

“It is expected that this initiative will significantly contribute to increasing the revenue of both railway companies and improving their business processes,” reads the press release.

It is estimated that the leasing of additional locomotives to the Macedonian company will enhance the capacity of transit traffic along Corridor 10, which partially runs through Serbia.

“Serbia Cargo generates additional revenue by leasing available locomotives, while Railways of North Macedonia, through this lease, ensures more efficient transport of transit trains, including those of major companies like COSCO, maintaining traffic continuity through Serbia,” reads the press release.

This agreement enables easier and faster cooperation between neighboring countries and represents a significant step toward the modernization and improvement of railway transport in the region, further strengthening the economic and infrastructural ties between the Republic of Serbia and North Macedonia.
