Serbia bounce back from heartbreaking loss to take basketball bronze

Paris, 10 August 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Serbia didn't feel sorry for themselves and bounced back from a heartbreaking defeat to the United States in the semi-finals to take bronze at the Paris Olympic men's basketball tournament.

In a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, Serbia this time got the best of world champions Germany to claim a 93-83 win on Saturday.

The Serbians led by 19 points in the third quarter. The Germans made an effort to close the gap, but it wasn't enough, with Isaac Bonga and top star Dennis Schröder recklessly missing precious points in the final two minutes of the game.

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić and Vasilije Micic were Serbia's top scorers with 19 points each.

In Thursday's semi-finals, Serbia were en route to stun top favourites US and book a spot in the final as the led by 11 points at half-time and again early in the fourth quarter.

But the Americans completed a fantastic comeback led by NBA stars LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. The US will face hosts France later on Saturday for the gold medal.

The US are chasing a fifth consecutive and a record-extending 17th overall Olympic gold.
