SDSM’s MPs to submit legal amendments preventing increase of officials’ wages, says Kovachevski

Skopje, 23 February 2024 (MIA) – SDSM’s parliamentary group will submit amendments to all laws regulating the wages of officials with the goal of preventing them from being raised, party leader Dimitar Kovachevski told reporters on Friday.

“We found a solution in line with the Constitution, with which the wages of officials won’t be increased in accordance with the new level of the average wage. The solution will lower the existing wage coefficients, which will prevent the wages of all elected and appointed officials from being raised,” said Kovachevski.

In March 2023, the Constitutional Court made it possible for the wages of elected and appointed officials to rise by 78 percent by abolishing an article from the Law on Officials' Wages and Compensation.

Following public outcry over the decision, the Government established a working group tasked with finding a solution, with representatives saying it would require that seven laws be amended.
