SDSM leader says ready for vote on constitutional changes anytime

Skopje, 11 April 2024 (MIA) - If it was up to me, we could vote on the constitutional changes today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, prior to the government's formation, after its formation, on the day of its formation, at noon, at midnight, 3 p.m., 3 a.m., as they wish, said SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski on Thursday.

Kovachevski urged all politicians to call him when they gather the courage to take decisions that are important for the country's future.

"My position is already familiar by putting the signature on the constitutional changes submitted in the Parliament. We negotiated for a long time with Bulgaria, with France, with other EU member-states, we had support from our strategic partners and we managed to get a negotiating framework including a clear Macedonian language, protected Macedonian identity and Macedonian culture. We started the EU accession negotiations and we completed the screening stage. The second intergovernmental conference will take place without any further requirements or scheduling, once we complete the constitutional changes," Kovachevski told reporters.

He said there should be, once and for all times, a document that clearly differentiates Macedonian from Bulgarian citizens.

"SDSM's position is as clear as it was when we joined the United Nations, when others did not have the courage. Our position was also clear when we accepted the European negotiating framework, when we started the accession negotiations and when we launched the process of constitutional amendments. Macedonia is ready to complete the negotiations and become an EU member. Decisiveness and courage is needed now," said Kovachevski.
