Berlin, 11 November 2024 (dpa/MIA) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his first telephone call with Donald Trump since he won the US election, on Sunday offered the incoming US president the opportunity to continue the long-standing cooperation between Berlin and Washington.
Scholz offered Trump the opportunity to "continue the decades of successful cooperation between the governments of both countries," according to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
Scholz also personally congratulated Trump on his election victory, Hebestreit said.
Both agreed to work together towards a return to peace in Europe. They also discussed the Germany-US relationship and the current geopolitical challenges, the spokesman added.
Scholz had already reached out to Trump on social media on Wednesday, immediately after his election victory, offering him a "reliable partnership." However, he had also made it clear that he is preparing for changes in Germany's relationship with the United States.
