Scholz decides that three nuclear power plants are to run longer
Berlin, 17 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - As the parties in Olaz Scholz's three-party coalition wrangle over nuclear power, the German chancellor decided that the country's remaining three nuclear power plants should be able to continue running until April 15, 2023 at the latest, a government spokesperson said in Berlin. Germany has had to restructure its energy mix due to a cut in Russian gas supplies as a consequence of the war in Ukraine. The gas supply cut and soaring prices have brought fears of heating and energy shortages this winter. One solution under consideration has been the temporary use of nuclear power plants that were set to be phased out according to a long-standing government plan. The parties in Germany's governing coalition were unable to hammer out a deal on the use of nuclear power despite top-level talks over the weekend.
