Scandal engulfs large child protection organization in Greece
Athens, 21 November 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday removed the entire leadership of one of the country's largest and best-known child protection organizations. According to a government spokesperson, the judiciary will now clarify exactly what happened in the children's homes of the Ark of the World charity. In recent days a growing number of people who grew up as children in the organization's homes have come forward with reports of beatings, draconian punishments, threats and sexual abuse. The Ark of the World used to enjoy a high reputation in Greek society. It's former head - a priest - regularly made media appearances and appealed for donations. The Orthodox Church has now banned him from holding Masses. He denies the accusations.
