Skopje, 23 June 2022 (MIA) – Ahead of the European Council in Brussels on Thursday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed concern because of the Bulgarian blockade on North Macedonia, saying there are efforts to overcome the dispute, with a 50-60 percent chance for a breakthrough next week.
“On Western Balkans, the situation differs from country to country. Bosnia knows it still needs to do things before it is granted candidate-status, on Kosovo there is some more progress towards visa liberalization, but my main worry is about North Macedonia, and therefore with Albania, because of the Bulgarian blockage on this country and starting accession talks,” PM Rutte told reporters.
This is creating a lot of irritation and I understand that, he said and added, “Tthe French, the Germans, we tried to play a small role there, trying to negotiate an outcome, and I think the Bulgarians are now pushing for a breakthrough.”
“These things have to still be acceptable to the Macedonians. Nothing is ever easy on the Balkans but here I think that you might see a 50-60 percent chance for a breakthrough next week,” said Rutte
