Moscow, 30 July 2022 (dpa/MIA) – The Russian energy giant Gazprom has cut off gas supplies to the Baltic EU country Latvia. The energy giant announced on Saturday that it had stopped deliveries because the conditions for drawing down gas had been violated. The state-owned company did not give details of the violations. Russia had recently suspended gas deliveries to several EU countries, including Poland and Bulgaria, because they had refused to pay in roubles. Russian President Vladimir Putin had introduced this new regulation as a reaction to the EU sanctions against Russia. Payments were until then usually made in euros or dollars. The government in Latvia had recently declared that it wanted to completely stop importing Russian gas from January 2023. This is seen as a reaction to the Russian war against Ukraine. Last year, Latvia still bought about 90% of its gas from Russia.
