Russia reports major Ukrainian drone attack in south west

Kiev, 9 August 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Russian authorities early Friday reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Lipetsk region in south-western Russia, some 200 kilometres from the border with Ukraine.

"Lipetsk is exposed to a massive attack of drones," Lipetsk Oblast Governor Igor Artamonov was quoted by Russian state agency TASS as saying.

"The air defence is working against them," the governor said on his Telegram page.

According to Artamonov, a power facility was damaged when a drone crashed, causing power supply disruptions.

Artamonov said there was a "detonation of dangerously explosive items" away from civilian structures, adding that rescue workers were on the scene.

The Ukrainian news portal Kyiv Independent, citing pro-Russian Telegram channels, reported there were also heavy explosions and fires in the Russian town of Rylsk in the Kursk region overnight.

The cause of the explosions was still unclear and the information provided by Russian authorities could not be independently verified.

Initially, there was no official confirmation of the attacks from the Ukrainian side.

Ukraine has been trying to repel a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.
