Rescue effort ends a day after deadly cable-car crash in Turkey

Istanbul, 13 April 2024 (dpa/MIA) - The last remaining person out of 184 stranded mid-air after Friday's cable-car crash in southern Turkey has been rescued, disaster authority AFAD head Okay Memis said on Saturday.

State broadcaster TRT showed footage of a man being lifted to a helicopter from a cable-car cabin in the Mediterranean resort town of Antalya. The man is reportedly in good health, TRT said.

One person was killed and at least seven injured after a cable-car cabin collided with a fallen mast in Antalya on Friday evening, state news agency Anadolu reported.

A major rescue effort, backed by helicopters, drones and around 500 personnel, has been ongoing for nearly 23 hours.

A probe is under way to determine the exact cause of the accident, AFAD's Memis told reporters in Antalya.

Meanwhile, a total of 13 suspects, including employees of the operating company, were being sought for detention as part of the probe, Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The cable-car service spans over 1.7 kilometres from Antalya city centre to Tünektepe hill. State news agency Anadolu reported that one of the cable-car masts had fallen over and that a cabin hit it and crashed into rocky terrain.

The accident comes during a busy season, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of Muslim holy month Ramadan.

The cable car is said to have been in operation since 2017 and consists of 36 cabins. It transports its guests to the summit of Tünektepe at a height of 605 metres above sea level.

The journey takes around nine minutes. There is room for six people in each cabin. It can transport 1,200 people per hour.
