Reports: Israel received list of more hostages to be released

Tel Aviv, 28 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) — Israel has received a new list of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for imminent release, Israeli media reported on Tuesday.

The people on the list are expected to be released on Tuesday, the Times of Israel reported, citing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The report said the list had been checked and the families of the hostages concerned had been notified.

The newspaper said it was not clear from the announcement how many hostages could be released. Other media had reported 10 people.

This would be the fifth group of Gaza hostages to be released since a ceasefire between Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas and Israel began on Friday. So far, more than 50 hostages have been freed. In return, 150 Palestinians have been released from prison.

The two sides on Monday agreed to extend the four-day truce in Gaza by two days, just hours before it was due to expire.

The agreement struck by Israel and Hamas last week provides for the possibility of extending the ceasefire in return for the release of a further 10 hostages per day.

In total, the deal foresees a maximum of 100 hostages to be swapped for up to 300 Palestinian inmates held in Israeli prisons, over the course of 10 days.

During the unprecedented October 7 attacks, Hamas fighters killed some 1,200 people in Israeli border communities near Gaza, and some 240 were abducted into the coastal Gaza Strip.

Israel responded by launching its heaviest bombardment of densely populated Gaza Strip to date and also began a ground offensive into the coastal area, where Hamas seized power by force in 2007.

Since the beginning of the war, some 15,000 people have been killed in Gaza and more than 36,000 have been wounded, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry there.
