Renewed Russian drone attacks hit Kiev overnight

Kiev, 25 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) - The Ukrainian capital Kiev came under Russian drone attack overnight, the city's mayor reported on Saturday morning.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that debris from drones shot down by Ukrainian air defences had crashed in the city. As a result, fires had broken out in several places, including a residential building and a kindergarten.

Several people were injured, including an 11-year-old child, Klitschko said.

People were told to stay in emergency shelters as the attack was continuing.

A high-rise building on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River caught fire due to falling debris, while an uninhabited area of about 100 square metres was also set on fire, according to the military administration in Kiev.

The Ukrainska Pravda newspaper wrote on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, that Kiev was being attacked by drones and that air defences were being deployed. A dpa reporter observed heavy, prolonged anti-aircraft fire.

Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine with air strikes since launching its invasion on February 24, 2022.

Ukraine's air defences are capable of shooting down the majority of drones and missiles. The country has called on Western supporters to supply more air defence systems in order to better protect its cities and regions.
