Radev calls for concrete action to resolve issues over rights of Macedonian Bulgarians
Skopje, 31 March 2022 (MIA) – After a meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi in Sofia, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said clear concrete action should be taken to resolve the issues with Macedonian Bulgarians, eradicate hate speech, and revise textbooks, MIA’s Sofia correspondent reports. “We’ve made some progress in our work. These issues are perceived thanks to Bulgaria’s persistence, and become a commitment of the EU. The question is what instruments will be used to guarantee the protection of our interest,” Radev said. He added that he expects the Bulgarian Government to protect the country’s national interest in a more categorical way. As regards the released Census data in North Macedonia, Radev said it was “another proof of the lack of justice for the Bulgarians in North Macedonia, who cannot openly declare themselves as Bulgarians, in a situation when 120,000 people have proved with a document of origin that they are Bulgarians.” According to Radev, that meant that Bulgaria should continue the veto policy on starting membership negotiations, until it receives clear guarantees.
