Skopje, 4 July 2022 (MIA) – People have gathered Monday for the third day in a row in front of the government in Skopje to protest against the French proposal put forward to unblock the country’s EU integration process and lift the Bulgarian veto. The protest is held under the slogan “Ultimatum – No Thank You”. A second protest was held in front of Parliament where protesters also demanded rejection of the French proposal. There protesters hurled eggs and empty bottles at the building while it was protected by a cordon of policemen. Meanwhile, some protesters broke through the protective fence. Protesters in front of the government also hurled eggs, bottles, flowers, etc, while the protective fence was broken through and several protesters walked into the government's yard. After skipping over the fence, they came face to face with a cordon of policemen. Also, people were chanting “Resignation” and signing patriotic songs. Police presence is heightened near the government. With no official organizer, the protest is supported by political parties and civil organizations believing the proposal is harmful for the Macedonian people and the Macedonian national interests. The protest is backed by the largest opposition party VMRO-DPMNE with its leader Hristijan Mickoski calling on people to join to defend European value and to salvage the EU negotiations process. After the incidents, SDSM issued a press release saying it condemns the violence at the protest "organized by VMRO-DPMNE and Levica in front of the government and Parliament." "The government tonight witnessed an attempt to repeat the 27 April 2017 storming by political parties mean harm for both the country and the citizens," said the ruling party.
