Prices monitored, trade margin restrictions to continue if necessary, says Economy Ministry

Skopje, 28 June 2023 (MIA) - Given that domestic prices on the market are stable as a result of the stabilization of the exchange prices of imported raw materials and electricity, when the deadline for the trade margin restrictions ends on 30 June 2023, domestic prices should continue to be determined according to market conditions, said the Ministry of Economy on Wednesday.

 

The Economy Ministry told MIA the prices of raw materials and energy on the global markets are being monitored. Although, long-term application of trade margins when there is no uncertainty of permanent growth of exchange prices can have an opposite effect on market conditions because the state would be imposing control on prices and reducing competitiveness.

 

However, the Ministry said, if the market assesses that the trade margin restrictions should be extended, they will be

 

"For now, we are monitoring the prices of raw materials and energy on the global stock market. Those prices will mainly dictate conditions and the need of extension of the measure, or we will let manufacturers and traders show social responsibility towards consumers when the deadline ends," the Ministry added.

At the end of April, the Government decided to continue the trade margin restrictions on basic food products until June 30.

 

According to the Decision, the highest trade margin for white bread (sliced or whole), while sugar and sunflower oil (non-refined) is set at 5 percent in retail and 5 percent wholesale.
