President Siljanovska Davkova seeks deep reforms in UN at Summit of the Future

New York, 23 September 2024 (MIA) - It is high time to face the ugly reality of wars, natural disasters, enormous poverty, inequality, international law violations, practicing the men's law instead of rule of law, sacrificing justice, ethics and moral for profit and power, said President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova in her address at the Summit of the Future in the United Nations on Sunday, MIA reports from New York.

President Siljanovska Davkova called for deep reforms within the UN that require resolution action.

"Bold endeavors are impossible without deep reforms in the UN, strengthened multilateralism in decision-making, developed mechanism of checks and balances in the relations between the Secretary-General, Security Council and the General Assembly, more inclusion and transparency in the decision-making process, as well as resolve and efficiency in coping with the enormous threats to peace, sustainable development and human rights," said Siljanovska Davkova.

According to her, there is a need for structural, functional, merit-based, democratic reforms, along with strengthened role of the General Assembly as a representative body of nations.

"The International Court of Justice must acquire a stronger role, while its judgments must be mandatory for all. There must be a more intensive cooperation and partnership with the civil society and increased transparency of all bodies. I do not believe that enlarging the Security Council with a few other permanent members having the exclusive veto right would strengthen the guarantee for peace and security, although I am aware that the global balance of power nowadays is not the same as the one in 1945. As a representative of a small country, I believe this body should allow for more access to smaller states in order to protect them from the real threat of larger ones. For that purpose, I perceive the Security Council as a kind of global coalition government," said Siljanovska Davkova.

She added that the UN Charter remains to be the fundamental act, the constitution of nations, but also a societal, interstate and international treaty.

The President said there should be an end to the "disrespect, circumvention and selective application of the Charter, as in the Macedonian case".

Siljanovska Davkova said the Western Balkans is an area vulnerable to climate changes, thus requiring a regional strategy and response, but also active cooperation with EU and UN agencies in the search for renewable energy sources.

In addition, the President voiced her commitment for the persons with disabilities, individuals of all vulnerable groups, as well as those most exposed to discrimination, while noting that she would set up councils for youth and diaspora, considering the exodus of young people from the country.

"I believe that the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations represent a solid and inspiring framework to trace and build a future in which peace, prosperity and justice will not be 'wishful thinking' but a real basis for action," underlined Siljanovska Davkova.

President Siljanovska Davkova is heading the Macedonian delegation at the 79th UN General Assembly, also including Deputy PM and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski.
